A Femininomenon in Monster Romance

8 Book Recommendations with Monstrous Women!

By: Raquel Green

From the first vampire novel, Camilla, to cult classics movies like Jennifer's Body, monstrous women have been a fascination to the masses and icons for queer women for centuries. Monster romance is a genre often dominated by male monsters, however, female monsters are flipping the script, offering new perspectives on love, identity, and spice. Here are eight monster romances where the ladies get a chance to be the non-human partner!

Maneater by Emily Antoinette

A succubus in the 80’s reclaiming her power and a man ready to serve her…

This book is an all time favorite for me! The beautiful woman on the cover is Elle and she is a succubus! This book is both witchy and nerdy, featuring the perfect soft domme/cinnamon roll simp trope with Shane, who is for anyone who watched Mike Faist in Challengers and wanted their own little pathetic man. Emily Antoinette is one of my favorites in the monster romance space and has so many good books to check out!

how to get a girlfriend (when you're a terrifying monster) by marie cardno

Even Eldritch horrors are yearning for a girlfriend…

This is book one in a trilogy of novellas following Trillin, our monstrous lady who isn’t exactly a lady but a small piece of an endless, all-devouring horror that manages to break away. It follows her and her adorable witch girlfriend Sian’s fun and wacky adventures! The pair are so cute! (see art here!!

Sometimes all a girl needs is a sleep demon who is willing to take out anyone for you…

This book is a part of the Dreamers & Demons series, which all feature sapphic romances with a monstrous FMC. This book is a sexy story between a powerless witch and a nightmare spirit as they fight against the real horror: abusive families and creeps in academia. Darva Green has three more titles in this series featuring a vampire, a Kikimora, and a werewolf!

taken to the deadlands by elle mae

The muzzle is not a deal breaker but a deal maker!

This book is also a part of a dark sapphic monster series, Stolen Demon Brides, focusing on women who are taken from the human realm and sold at a demon auction. This novella follows the steamy romance between a fake medium and her new demon captor who needs her services and gets more than she bargained for. Elle Mae is known for her dark romances both in the paranormal and contemporary spaces. You can never go wrong with one of her titles!

Prey For Me by Chloe Slate

Obsession and sapphic yearning on the severance floor…

Another dark sapphic romance, this time in the workplace! This book follows April, who develops an unhealthy obsession with her new coworker Rosalia, a demon who seemingly hates her. The spice…off the charts, but definitely check the trigger warnings before indulging in this one! This is one of Chloe Slate’s many sapphic romances.

Sink Into Her by Elaine J. Daniels

For the young girls who had a crush on Sara Paxton in Aquamarine…

This book is set at a Florida resort where pool manager Alex finds a kraken with amnesia. This is a cute, sapphic romance full of some of my favorite tropes: grumpy x sunshine, one bed, slow burn, and tentacle spice! Elaine J. Daniels is also the author of two other sapphic monster romances featuring a Mothwomen, harpies, and minotaurs! Give her work some love!

mother of pearl by a.a. fairview

Mother of Pearl by A.A. Fairview

Sometimes your controversial young girlfriend is also a fish person…

This is a novella so good that I enjoyed the oviposition (IYKYK)! Mother of Pearl is set at a country club pool where a beautiful mother and divorcee, Stephanie, and lifeguard and fishperson, Lydia, enter a sugar baby relationship. The spice in this book is delectable, and its ability to not shy away from the complicated parts of their relationship made it even more amazing! This is not A.A. Fairview’s only aquatic monster romance! Her Princess Her Pearls is also a sapphic mermaid novella for those craving more.

blessed by the cupid distribution system by robin jo margaret

Teeth-rotting sapphic sweetness with a bit of steam!

I can’t talk about monster romance without discussing one of my favorite authors, Robin Jo Margaret! This novella follows Iris, a nerdy hopeless romantic alone on Valentine’s Day, who is visited by Jaya, a cupid who decides to find her a partner for the day and ends up as her partner instead! A very sweet, magical romance unfolds between the two and it’s one of my favorites from this author!

There are so many great monster romances out with female monsters! From sweet and cozy to dark and spicy, there’s a bit of everything for everyone! There’s also an upcoming ten author collaboration project (featuring both Robin Jo Margaret and Chloe Slate) releasing April 8th titled She Was Monstress Volume One: An Anthology of Monster Women, “centering terrifyingly beautiful monster women and the people who aren't afraid to love them.” Check it out!
