The Ultimate Guide to Bookish Events

By Elana Katz

One of the best parts about reading (besides, well, actually reading) is getting to bring that love of books to real-life events. Reading is technically a solitary activity, so the ability to see that hobby come to life surrounded by other people who appreciate it, too, is unmatched. There are book conventions and festivals in virtually every major city now, making it more possible than ever to connect with the bookish community outside of phones and screens.

Given how popular these book events are, we figured you might want to show up prepared. Whether you’re attending a huge book convention, a local festival, or even just a gathering at an indie bookstore, here’s everything you should consider bringing to make the most out of your experience - plus some ideas on what you can do to make your event even more fun.

Comfortable Clothes and Shoes

Considering how many events are all-day affairs, being comfortable is a no-brainer. Sneakers are a must for walking to and from author signing tables, but there’s no reason for your comfy shoes to be boring. Look for colorful and fun pairs to keep things lovely while you’re on your feet.

While you’ll want to consider breathable clothing for the same reasons, this also doesn’t have to mean throwing on sweats and calling it a day. There are plenty of small shops that make bookish T-shirts, and consider pairing one with a skort or wide-leg jeans for a stylish look.

Long-Lasting Makeup and Skincare

One thing about a convention is that it’s going to be sweaty, there’s just no getting around it. You’re either going to be outside all day or you’re going to be indoors surrounded by people in a stuffy environment. Trust us, deodorant is your friend.

If you wear makeup, think of a book event the same way you would a concert or a day at a theme park. Long-lasting everything is a must – setting spray and/or setting powder, long lasting lip products, and waterproof mascara are necessary. Plus, you’re hopefully going to be taking pictures with authors so keep that in mind when getting ready. If the event is outside, don’t forget the sunscreen too!

A Book Cart

A book cart is an investment, but it’s worth it. If you’re going to an event with multiple authors you love, chances are you might want to bring quite a few books to get signed. Save your shoulders by getting a book cart that you can wheel around rather than carrying heavy books. The best part? There are a ridiculous amount of small shops that make book-themed stickers that you can get to decorate your cart with and then you can reuse it for the next event.

Reusable Bags

While a book cart is necessary for times when you know you’ll be bringing a lot of books with you, let’s not be naive – you’re also going to be buying books and we all know it. Stick a reusable bag (or two) in your purse if you carry one or in your cart so you can be prepared for any new books that might be purchased.

Alternative Items to be Signed

No book? No problem. If you don’t own a lot of physical books, it’s possible to still experience author signings. Bring an item like a t-shirt, a tote bag, or a notebook that you can have multiple authors sign. It’ll be an amazing keepsake without the hassle of buying multiple books.

Aside from signings, you can still meet authors at these events and have something tangible to remember them by. Sure, phone photos always work, but consider bringing a Polaroid camera to have other types of pictures as a souvenir too.

Souvenirs to Share

If one of your goals in going to an in-person event includes connecting with the community to make friends, come prepared with something to give out. It’s common to find people handing out friendship bracelets at big events, but there are also other fun options such as homemade bookmarks or stickers. Doing a craft might be a fun thing to do leading up to the event. Plus, if you’re nervous about talking to people, handing out items is a good way to start up conversations without it feeling awkward.

A Mask

Hey, did you know it’s still possible to get Covid? If you’re planning on attending a large event surrounded by strangers, bring a mask with you! Some events still require it, but even for the ones that don’t, it’s never a bad idea.

It’s very possible to attend a bookish convention or festival with nothing prepared, but keeping these tips in mind will just make your experience that much more fulfilling. The more you feel comfortable with wearing something you feel good or bringing items that will make your life easier, the more you can relax and enjoy the event.
